The profession of policing needs progressive, innovative, and adaptable leaders who are well-prepared to meet the increasing demands, emerging trends, and evolving challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mindset must be one of continual personal and professional improvement. I chose to further my knowledge and growth through the University of San Diego’s Master of Science in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership (MS-LEPSL) program. This cutting-edge program’s curriculum is rooted in ethical leadership-building that challenges its learners to “be a force for change” while exploring answers to the most critical and relevant public safety issues facing modern 21st century policing.
As a Chief of Police, I appreciated that LEPSL provided me with a deeper understanding of the critical issues, best practices, and emerging trends law enforcement executives must confront. The program’s marriage of leading contemporary theory with immediate real-world application offers police leaders the crucial tools to succeed in today's contested and ever-evolving environment. This e-portfolio and its selected works represent the capstone of my nearly two-year MS-LEPSL journey. The project provided me with a valuable opportunity to reflect upon and share all that I’ve learned, experienced and imparted as an executive leader-scholar during the program. As a recently retired Chief now exploring “Chapter 2” of my life and career, LEPSL has energized and inspired me to seek new ways to serve and advance the noble calling of policing. This experience served as a launchpad for my continuing service as a law enforcement and public safety mentor, educator, and consultant.
